A prequel is a thorny undertaking. First, you need to justify why anyone needs to learn the story of what happened before the seminal (or, really, just popular) story that succeeds this jump into the past. And once you’ve done that, the story you’re telling needs to be good enough to stand up to that […]
When Vince Gilligan (the creator of Breaking Bad and co-creator of Better Call Saul) announced that he would be creating a new series for AppleTV+ starring Rhea Seehorn (the beating heart of Better Call Saul), I was beyond excited. And now that the series is here – and now that I have seen seven of […]
When my colleague, Kieran Freemantle, tweeted me earlier this week, asking me to name the best television series set in each of the 50 states (sorry Washington D.C.), my first thought was, “Oh my gosh. 50 is a lot of TV shows and that sounds like a lot of research.” But the more I noodled […]
It’s that time of year again. The days are short, the temps are falling (at least here in Chicagoland), and it’s nearly the end of 2022. Which means that it’s time for my annual Top Ten TV Shows list! It was a heck of a year for television. Network comedies roared back into prominence with […]
When it was first announced, all those years ago, that Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould would be putting together a prequel series to Gilligan’s Breaking Bad (on which Gould had been a key writer and director), I, like many critics, was worried. It also references plot points from Breaking Bad. Before the season six premiere, a friend and I put together a list of prop bets as to what might […]
If you’ve noticed an influx of returning favorite television shows onto your streaming platforms in the last few weeks – with more set to be released in early May – you aren’t alone. Thanks to pandemic delays and various other scheduling quirks – including the upcoming cut-off for Emmy Award consideration – we’re experiencing a […]
2020 is finally on its way out (and not a moment too soon for anyone), which means it’s time for that time honored holiday tradition: Critics’ Top Ten Lists! As we all spent more time on our sofas watching TV this year than any of us thought we would, I suspect many of you will […]
“Am I bad for you,” Jimmy McGill asks his wife and personal moral center Kim Wexler in the fifth season finale of Better Call Saul. If he’d asked that question at any other point in the series, the answer would have been a resounding yes. After all, Kim was the one thing keeping Jimmy from […]
So, I’ve avoided reviewing The Mandalorian these last few weeks because, frankly, I didn’t have all that much to say about the show. It had fallen into a predictable pattern: Mando and Baby Yoda reach a new planet, they run into a friend/foe, Mando defeats the foe, they make a new friend, they leave the […]
