Joy. That’s the word that came to mind again and again while watching “Generation Why,” the first installment of the new MCU/Disney+ miniseries Ms. Marvel. Bright, fun, and honest, the coming-of-age story of Kamala Kahn (the future Ms. Marvel of the title) already feels like a different journey in the Marvel universe. More analogous to […]
What a fitting end to a disappointing series. In fact, it was such a disappointing ending that I genuinely didn’t realize it was the end of the episode until the credits began rolling – that’s how anticlimactic and messy the episode was. We were robbed of the true showdown between Moon Knight and Harrow/Ammit that […]
Well, the penultimate episode of Moon Knight was far more concerned with explaining just what turned Marc Spector into Steven Grant than it was with taking steps to solve any of the key narrative arcs the show set-up at its outset. Which is all well and good, if you were looking for an MCU series […]
This week’s Moon Knight was far and away the most successful of the season – and that’s even with the strange detour into fractured mind of Marc/Steven as he lingered on the brink of death, which brought to mind the very good first season of FX’s Legion*. Why did it work so well? It focused […]
When starting a new series, there’s, understandably, a good deal of world and character building to complete before the story can really get underway. After all, if we don’t care at least a bit about our central characters and understand who they are and what they want, how can we appreciate the dangers, drama, and […]
We’re a third of the way through Moon Knight and I’m starting to think the shine is already wearing off the apple with this one. Taking into account that this is essentially an origin story mixed with an world-saving adventure (which I think might be a bit more than can be covered within a six […]
After one episode, I’m convinced the only reason Moon Knight will succeed – if it succeeds – is due to the charisma of Oscar Isaac. Because, despite what appears to be a pretty insane premise (man with dissociative identity disorder ends up possessed by an ancient Egyptian deity – who is voiced by F. Murray […]
If there’s one criticism that can be levied against the slate of Disney+ MCU television shows it’s that they have trouble with endings. WandaVision, which was one of the best MCU offerings to date, stumbled at the close. Loki packed a punch, but also needed to introduce a villain for a future MCU project, so […]
Well, here we are again – diving into yet another MCU Disney+ series; this time, dealing with the oft forgotten original Avenger, Hawkeye. I have to admit, much like with Wanda, I was never a huge Hawkeye fan – no offense to Jeremy Renner, but the bow and arrow toting superhero was never prominent enough […]
Chloé Zhao’s movies are beautiful. They feature incredible photography of natural landscapes, and ultra-naturalistic dialogue often delivered by non-actors cast off the street. Her films are deeply meditative and authentic and have the capacity to really touch audiences who are open to a different kind of movie. It made perfect sense that she swept last […]
