Together Review

Together is a body horror film that sees the real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie struggle when moving to the big city.

Tim (Dave Franco) and Millie (Alison Brie) are a 30-something couple who move from the big city to the town of Fulton after Millie takes up a teaching position. They end up falling into a pit when they go hiking and are stuck there for a whole night. When they get out, Tim finds himself being physically drawn to his partner and unable to cope without her.

Together has been one of the hyped horror films of 2025. It premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, and it was subject to a bidding war.  Neon won out, beating the likes of A24, Mubi, and Searchlight Pictures. Neon has a great reputation, having distributed acclaimed films like I, Tonya, Parasite, and Anora, and its horror offerings include Immaculate, Longlegs, and The Monkey. The trailers have highlighted that the film has a 100% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, although it has gone down to 91%.

Together follows the adage that body horror should be a metaphor for a bigger issue. Together’s focus was on co-dependent relationships. Before the move to Fulton, tensions had already arisen between the couple. Millie made a comment that the couple were wearing the same outfit (as well as offering some foreshadowing), leading to Tim changing, and at their leaving party, they end up embarrassed. Tim feels trapped in the relationship, unable to commit, and becomes isolated when they move to the countryside. Millie had a happier disposition, but seemed to be in a relationship for the sake of being in a relationship. After the pair drinks the mysterious water, Tim becomes dependent on Millie: he develops withdrawal symptoms and needs to be close to her, even at inappropriate times. This drove a wedge between the pair. This relationship story makes Together an interesting companion piece with Companion, since that sci-fi film looked at toxic relationships.

Together sets out its horror stood out early. It opened with a prologue that showed two dogs drinking the mysterious water and suffering the consequences afterwards. There was a discovery that would make my mum recoil. The merging effects had an immediate impact on Tim and Millie, and it escalated as the film progressed. One moment will make any man who sees the film wince, and it did have one of my horror triggers: eyeballs. Fortunately, the stomach-churning moments happened gradually, unlike The Substance, which was a full-on body horror movie from the get-go.

Franco and Brie came from comedy backgrounds. Franco’s big break was in 21 Jump Street, and Brie was known for Community. This led to Together being more comedic than expected. There were some witty and biting exchanges between the pair. The director, Michael Shanks, and his editor, Sean Lahiff, ensured the film had some darkly comedic moments through some awkward silence and abrupt cuts. Together was one of those films that showed there’s a fine line between horror and comedy.

Together was a satisfying horror offering that aimed to make a point with its more squeamish elements. It’s fun for anyone who likes their horror in the body variety.
