Burkely’s Top Twenty Yuri Webcomics of 2025 [Part 3]

As I’ve noted in parts 1 and 2 of this series, yuri webcomics are popular online. This post will focus on teen romance and slice-of-life (Love and be Loved), teen romance (Letters on the Wall), teen drama and slice-of-life (Slice of Life), and young adult comedy and romance (High-Class Homos) comics. As a warning, this post will discuss toxic relationships, queerphobia, death, violence, and other mature topics. This is the third post of three. Part one covered list items 12-20. Part two covered list items 5-11. The this one will covers list items 1-4.

4. Letters on the Wall on Webtoons Originals

This teen romance begins with Tara Muniz who returns from Spain, where she has been living for five years, to her hometown to obtain a bachelor’s degree in arts from University of Selford Manchester. In the process, she learns that she has been left in the dust as people have moved on. She slowly learns the real reason she returned, as she gets close to her childhood best friend, Emma Miller. This comic is co-created by Jaelyngs and MissBlackClover. The first of these authors is a Mexican artist. She created the original version on Webtoons Canvas. The second, also known as Ella, is a sapphic Mexican artist. Jaelyngs and MissBlackClover also co-created the Spanish-language version of this comic, entitled Cartas en la pared. The English-language version is six episodes behind. As such, those who speak Spanish know what is going to happen before those that speak English.

This webcomic began on Webtoons Originals in December 2023. The characters and artwork draw you in, as is the case with other webcomics. The protagonist, Tara, a painter, who knows that putting your art down in a permanent way is form of vulnerability, with mistakes you can’t hide. She is annoyed with her mother, Julia, who seems to disregard her. Min Park, another childhood friend, is her guide. From there, there is a slow burn romance between Emma and Tara, with both having crushes on each other, even though Emma has a girlfriend named Nathalie (“Nath”). Their relationship shows strains and seems to moving toward them breaking up, as Nath is the one who restarted the relationship.

In more recent issues, Nando, a boy that Tara lived with in Spain thinks that he can begin a romantic relationship with her, but she is having none of it, and she pushes him away. This is in part because she grew up with a negligent mother and was forced to stay in Spain. Also, she does not like boys and does not appear to be bisexual. Furthermore, Nando is pushy and forces his feelings on her. Emma tries to push down her feelings for Tara, even throwing away a box with her precious childhood memories, while Tara reconnects with Emma’s grandparents. Emma and Tara go on a date-not-date to a BlackPunk concert. As season 2 continues, I look forward to what Season 3 has to offer, likely involving Nath and Emma breaking up since Nath is the one keeping the relationship going. This webcomic can be supported on the Spanish-language Patreon run by the comic’s co-authors.

3. High Class Homos on Webtoons Originals

This young adult comedy is a romantic story set in medieval times which centers on two best friends: Princess Sapphia of Mytilene and Prince August of Phthia. They plan to pull off a convincing sham marriage (i.e. marriage of convenience), a marriage that their parents push them into. While August is gay, Sapphia is lesbian. Both try to find people to date within the castle walls. The original version of this webcomic was on Webtoons Canvas, where thirty-nine issues were published between September 2019 and October 2020. The comic’s author, Momozerii, also published a short story on Webtoons in 2020 entitled August 32nd.

This comic, which started in September 2021, shows Sapphia is the first one to raise the idea of a sham marriage. She soon falls in love with one of the kitchen maids, Odette, after she starts hitting on another maid, Marla. August falls in love with Percy (“Percival”). As the series go on, their love grows, with Sapphia even going out on a date with Marla (because she thinks that Odette rejected her). There’s also Lucas, a trans man, who reconciles with Marla. He was her ex-girlfriend before transitioning to his current gender. Additionally, Sapphia and August have to deal with their royal obligations. Later, Sapphia and Odette begin going out. To make matters worse, the toxic ex-friend of Sapphia, Nicolosi (called “Cabbage Head” by Sapphia and fans), comes onto the scene, causing her to be sent home after she kicks him with her foot, casting himself as the victim.

A witch, Lunarella Nocturne, helps Sapphia with her revenge plan to get back at Nicolosi, after she returns to Phthia. Percy and August begin dating. Nicolisi is knocked out by Luna, during the wedding of Sapphia and August, and she learns that August is gay. It is also revealed that Luna helped Lucas transition, thanks to magic. August’s father collapses after seeing August and Percy kiss in one episode. In more recent episodes, readers meet Odette’s sister, parents, and August’s mother, there is an effort to legalize same-sex marriage in Phthia, which succeeds, some council members are gay, lesbian, or trans, and August’s father wakes up from Luna’s spell. This year, the series ended its second season. A print version of the first volume released on November. It can be ordered from Bookshop, and volume 2 can be pre-ordered. I look forward to where this webcomic goes from here in the third, and final, season.

2. Slice of Life on Webtoons Canvas and Tapas

This webcomic is a slice-of-life teen drama which begins when Lady Vengeance (i.e. Yuriko), an anime protagonist, is brought to life She falls in love with a cheerleeader named Lucy. Slice of Life is authored by Phil Falco and Kat Calamia, two best friends who enjoy telling queer stories. They are co-founders of Lifeline Comics. They previously published a short version of this story in 2022. They continue to promote wholesome queer romance in their ongoing series Rainbow Canvas, which highlights other webcomics on Webtoons such as My Dragon Girlfriend, She’s a Keeper, Mermaid Huntress, and In My Heart. The webcomic originally had a successful Kickstarter campaign, raising more than the goal set ($15,000), with crossover art, variant covers by illustrators Alina Lalik, Lia Ramirez, and Emma Oosterhous (known for Grand Slam Romance), release of physical and digital books, and other rewards.

Slice of Life began in June 2021. Season one started by slowly building the romantic relationship between Lucy and Yuriko (which begins as a friendship with flirting). The comic also noted the motivations behind Lucy’s sister, Ravyn (a mega-fan of Lady Vengeance), and Yuriko adapting to the real world. It also brought in other characters like a Black kid named Dante, who begins as Lucy’s boyfriend and then later is only a friend (who is gay). Lucy comes to terms with her lesbian identity. There’s drama, like Brett and Dante outing people without their permission, Brett’s relationship on thin ice with Kris (who has a trans female sister named Charlie), anxiety, family dynamics which can be fraught (between Lucy and Ravyn, and Ravyn and their dad, Simon), tensions with friends, and learning more about yourself.

In season two, Lucy tries to come to terms what it means to be a lesbian (and deal with her internalized homophobia). Other characters like Charlie, and Lucy’s first crush (Britt), have a role. In addition, Kris and Brett break up, Ravyn and Yuriko bond, Dante and Yuriko join a club for LGBTQ+ folks, and Yuriko self-identifies as pansexual. Furthermore, Ravyn convinces Lucy to watch yuri anime, Lucy comes out to Simon, Lucy’s mom is revealed to be bi, and Lucy tells Yuriko that she loves her. This season also has Lucy coming out to her friends, Yuriko getting a pet snake, and tension between Beck and Lucy. Ravyn has to deal with her conception of Yuriko further crumbling when Lucy and Yuriko begin dating. She tries to figure out where she fits in, with some rocky interactions in the process. Yuriko deals with the appearance of Kojima (her ex-boyfriend) from a laptop screen. This comic can be enjoyed on Webtoons Canvas or Tapas. It continues to go strong, can be supported on Patreon, and often features other girl’s love comics. I look forward to what’s coming up next.

1. Love and be Loved on Webtoons Canvas

This comic takes the no. 1 spot. This romantic slice-of-life begins by following Brooklyn “Brook” Cho and Vanessa Price, each with different interests and personalities, one shy (Brook) and one popular (Vanessa). They learn what it means to love each other and be loved. This comic’s author, GotMLK7, often posts on her Webtoons profile. You can enjoy Love and be Loved on Webtoons Canvas. So far, over 270 issues have been published on Webtoons. It began in June 2020 with Brook and Vanessa dating. Vanessa is supportive of her, but she can’t do things which are too cute, while Brook gushes about her interests, including her favorite anime. Vanessa even reads a book on how to flirt. The comic also introduces Brook’s younger sister, Harper, and Vanessa’s friends Grace Dubois, Kai Wailani, and Sabrina Hawthorne. It takes place in Central California.

As Love and be Loved goes on, Sabrina breaks up with Duke Godwin after he insults Vanessa and Brooke. A trans girl named Patricia “Patty” Hawthorne gets close with Harper (they become friends), and the single mom of Harper and Brook named Hyeon-Ju Cho is introduced. In one story arc, Vanessa, Brook, and Harper go to an anime con together, where they meet Sabrina and Patty. In other episodes, they do makeovers, Brook goes to the movies with Vanessa’s friends, Kai realizes he is asexual, they have a game night, and Damien Lonato, the high school English teacher, is shown to be married to a man named Sam. Vanessa has trouble with her overbearing mother, Janet. Her mother acted negatively when she tried to come out. Kai tries to become a sort-of LGBTQ+ resource. Beyond this, the characters play Dungeons & Dragons, and Misha “Mimi” Vang, a non-binary person, is introduced.

Vanessa also begins reading yuri (and later boy’s love) manga, and Damien has to deal with issues with his daughter, Madeline “Maddie” Lonato. At other points, the characters go to the beach and aquarium, and begin journeys to learn their sexual identities. Harper and Brook have to confront their father Dirk (their mother’s ex-husband) when he comes to visit. Vanessa helps, even smacking him in the face. Harper and Patty begin to get closer romantically, Brook cares for Vanessa when she is sick, Sabrina practices lines with Vang (and they begin dating), Vanessa’s brother Rafael is introduced, and Elisha, the girl that made Grace question her sexuality shows up. Otherwise, Vanessa and Brook go on a date in an amusement park. They have to deal with Rafael learning they are in a relationship. Kai’s sister, Alonna, Rafael’s partner, pushes him to learn about queer people.
